4 reasons you need to take your training outside

1. You'll get your daily D fix

Thanks to oft-overcast skies and long days shackled to desks, in the UK it can be a struggle to keep your vitamin D levels topped up. In the winter months, taking a supplement is a good solution, but on those rare occasions when the sun escapes its cloud-shroud, you need to make the most of it.

As little as five to 30 minutes in the sun twice a week is enough to keep your vitamin D stores at optimum levels, according to the National Institutes of Health. Plan your training session for when rays are strongest – between 11am and 3pm – and make sure you slather on a quality SPF product like P20, which will provide 10 hours of water-resistant protection from just a single application. So you can be sure it's only your hill sprints turning your cheeks scarlet.

2. You're spending too much time indoors

Without wishing to sound like a hectoring mother, you need to get out of the house more, buddy. Research from the University of California at Berkeley suggests we spend a paltry 7% of our lives beyond the confines of four walls – much of which, we fear, is around your daily commute. Not exactly quality time.

The solution? Drag your lunch break away from the social media vortex and fit in a quick run – or, failing that, at least a couple circles round the block. Wind resistance boosts your calorie burn by 10% when compared to a treadmill session. And even if you're only ambling through a few streets you'll boost your mood, energy and creativity so you can power through the afternoon slump.

3. Hotter: better, faster, stronger

The benefits of training in extreme cold – from faster fat-burning to improved oxygen efficiency – are well known. But less common knowledge is the physiological improvements your body enjoys courtesy of working out when it's sweltering.

Through upgrading your body's ability to regulate its temperature and helping your heart pump more blood to your muscles, training on hot days will see you smash your PBs once you return to cooler climes. A study at the University of Oregon found undertaking 10 days of 'heat exposure' training led cyclists to clock a 7% improvement in performance. Brave the heat to set your training goals alight.

4. You'll stick to your sessions

The park, we can all surely agree, is more fun than the gym. Which is probably why the University of Sherbrooke found outdoor sessions boast higher attendance rates than gym classes.

No queuing. No tense water cooler face offs with gargantuan gym bros. No thumping Europop soundtrack. Plus, you'll boost your immunity, crush stress and improve your mood, too. Booked your boot camp yet? Hop to it. Summer won't last forever, you know.
