Chipotle Adds Chorizo to Its Menu
After some serious losses due to one too many foodborne illness outbreaks, Chipotle continues to try to win back their customers’ love and loyalty. After running a series of failed promotions and launching a temporary rewards program to increase sales, the fast-casual chain’s latest strategy is to broaden their menu. As of today, all Chipotle locations nationwide will serve chorizo. Like their other protein options, customers can add the new spicy chicken and pork sausages to burritos, bowls, salads, and tacos. Chipotle executives toyed with the idea of adding the meat option to their menus after testing it in Kansas City in 2015, and then in Manhattan, Sacramento, San Diego, Columbus, Dulles, and Denver in 2019.
“The reaction to chorizo in the cities that have had it has been overwhelmingly positive, so we’re making it available in all of our restaurants across the country,” Chipotle Co-CEO, Steve Ells recently explained.

The newest nationwide addition combines a blend of responsibly raised chicken and pork spiced with toasted cumin, paprika, and chipotle peppers. While the combo may sound nutritionist-approved, don’t go replacing your usual protein with this new addition just yet. Until now, carnitas (Chipotle’s classic pork option) was the chain’s most caloric meat, boasting 210 calories and 12 grams of fat in a four-ounce serving. Opt for chorizo instead of carnitas, and you’ll be adding an extra 90 calories and six grams of fat to your order—definitely not a smart move if you’re trying to watch what you eat.
Although chorizo is a solid source of protein (a single serving has an impressive 32 grams), the chain’s chicken has just as much of the muscle-building macro but carries 120 fewer calories and half the amount of sodium. So if you’re looking to lose belly fat, skip out on the calorie- and fat-laden chorizo and go for a chicken. We recommend getting it in a burrito bowl with one scoop of black beans, one scoop of fajita vegetables, lettuce, tomato salsa, and a half portion of guacamole, for a meal that contains 460 protein-packed calories.
