Doghouse with his own hands

Doghouse with his own hands

After we had a baby, the wife insisted that the dog live on the street or at least stay there for a while. There is nothing to be done, during the vacation, which I took in connection with paternity, decided to make a booth for the dog with my own hands.

We have a small short-haired dog, so it does not tolerate cold and rain. There was an idea to place the dog in the nursery, but it became a pity and did not want to part.

I work in a department store, and we still have a huge number of pallets. Of course, the idea arose to take advantage of this. So my fantasy was where to turn. Having had almost a whole month of vacation, I went to work in reserve. There was no drawing or plan, except that the room for the dog should be isolated from the wind and rain, I wanted a sloping roof with high ceilings sufficient for the dog to calmly stand up. In addition, I did not want to leave her in the dark, she should have the opportunity to bask in the sun.

Stage 1: Basis of one pallet

I forgot to photograph this stage of the work, for the basis I used the euro pallet. Added more slats to close the gap between adjacent boards. I also nailed the boards from other pallets, to the sides of the pallet, so that the wind would not blow there. Sanded and rounded edges where possible. This allowed to raise the floor to a sufficient height so that it does not get wet and was warm enough.

Stage 2: Putting the frame

To assemble the frame of the doghouse, I had to purchase a little bar. The timber was lined with boards on both sides in order to make insulating cavity. The roof and walls are made with a bevel, just for beauty.

The tree is usually full of holes and all sorts of knots, except this board may not be completely straight, so I decided to fill the gaps with mounting foam. Perhaps this is not the best solution, but I thought that the dog would be so much warmer and this would provide additional waterproofing.

At this stage I visited the idea "It will weigh a ton!".

Stage 3: Roof

For a start, I secured the boards from the pallet, on the section of the roof with a ramp, and then drove the boards on a short straight section. I cut the boards after they were fastened, and a reliable jigsaw helped me with this.

The side overhang of the roof is supported by three short bars from the pallet.

Step 4: Painting

After the doghouse was almost finished (except for the door), it's time to paint it.

Previously, I filled all the extra holes, polished and leveled the heads of the screws. I did not want it to be noticeable that the booth was assembled from pallets.

After that, I painted the outside of the kennel, in matt black paint for the street. The floor, interior walls and ceiling were primed and varnished.

Step 5: Door manufacture and installation

This stage of work was postponed to the last, since he did not have a clear plan of action or drawing.

I started with the inner frame of the doorway, which I made from the roofing strip. Getting the right angles using hand tools was not easy. Then he made four exterior panels using the boards from the pallet. I secured them with glue and screws.

For the inner window frame used the remaining thin boards. The width of the board allowed the installation of two glasses, i.e. to make single-chamber "double-glazed window".

Then re-filled everything, polished and painted.

To install the door bought a hinge for the gate,in also a few locks of stainless steel, for closing the door. When installing the door, he put cardboard to adjust the position of the door. The final appearance after installation caused a certain sense of gorodosti.

Stage 6: Rain Protection

To protect the roof from the rain and used a ruberoid left by the neighbor. I used a blowtorch for laying it, but since the pieces were small and I worked without gloves, I got several burns. I recommend to use some protective gloves.

And yet ... the pain that I had to endure, made me doubly proud of my work!

I do not want to write that after a few months the roofing felt began to flake off, maybe I didn’t warm it up enough or it was too hot outside. Roofing works for the first time.

Step 7: Glazing

Glazing doghouse

In the spirit of making a doghouse as cheap as possible, I got a pair of 3mm clear acrylic as glass. They seemed a bit thin to me, but they were free, so they suited me perfectly.

I used scissors to cut acrylic. Made two glasses, one smaller for the outer window frame and more for the inside.Since the inner frame retreats to a depth of approximately 10mm, a good insulating gap is obtained. In the inner glass, two small holes were drilled, from above and below, to prevent condensation. Acrylic before fastening, it is recommended to pre-drill so that it does not crack when screwing in the screw.

Stage 8: Finished Product

For airing the booth, I took it from the garage to the street, it is necessary that the smell of varnish and paint disappears. In order to make it, it took the help of a neighbor. The kennel was not as heavy as I had supposed at the beginning, although the appearance and quantity of wood suggested the opposite.

At first, the dog reacted with a little skepticism, but after a couple of weeks and after a blanket was laid inside, she gladly began to go there and eat her bones. I also loved to climb on the roof of the booth and bark at outsiders.

The doghouse, which was assembled with his own hands, in front of you in all its glory.
