Doing THIS Means You'll Eat 137 Fewer Calories Every Day
Here's a pretty awesome reason to dust off that cutting board. A new study inPublic Health Nutritionfound that people who cooked dinner at home more often ate healthier—i.e. fewer calories, carbohydrates, fats, and sugars—compared with those who ate out more, regardless of whether or not they were trying to lose weight.
To reach these conclusions, researchers analyzed data from 9,569 adults, categorizing them into three groups: low-cooking (those who cooked dinner once or less per week), medium-cooking (two to five times per week), and high-cooking (six to seven times per week). They then examined peoples' responses to detailed questions about dietary patterns, and whether or not they'd been trying to lose weight.

What they found: Those who cooked most often on average ate 137 fewer calories, 3 g less fat, and 16 g less sugar per day than those who didn't cook more than one meal a week. Not too shabby considering that cutting out 100 calories per day from what you usually eat may help you lose 10 pounds over the course of a year.
The reason may seem obvious: Foods eaten and made at home are generally lower in calories, fat, sugar, and salt, and more nutritious than foods you eat out—especially fast foods and restaurant foods, says study author Julia Wolfson, MPP, a CLF-Lerner Fellow in the Department of Health, Policy, and Management at Johns Hopkins University and Bloomberg School of Public Health. What's even cooler, though, is that those who regularly cooked at home also tended to eat fewer calories on the occasions that they did eat out, suggesting that their healthy habits somehow carry over to the restaurant scene.

Though the study had its limitations—including that it disregarded other meals like breakfast and lunch—the bottom line from the data, says Wolfson, is that cooking dinner frequently is linked with a higher quality diet.
