Konchalovsky and Vysotskaya were first published with his son in Venice
The action of the film, which participates in the main competition program, takes place during the Second World War. The main character, the Russian émigré Olga, played by Vysotskaya, was arrested during the Nazi occupation of Paris for harboring Jewish children. On her way there are two men - married Frenchman Jules, collaborating with the Gestapo, and German Helmut, a high-ranking SS officer, who loves Russian culture.
At a press conference before the premiere, Konchalovsky explained the idea of Paradise:
“The film is not about physical suffering, but about spiritual violence. In Dante's hell, the worst tortures are not physical, but spiritual. My main task is to make that horror that a person does not feel, being sure that he is right. This terrible self-deception pushes good people to do evil, being sure that they are doing good. ”
The film is already called one of the favorites of the competition. Artistic director of the Venice Film Festival Alberto Barbera called the picture brilliant. “The previous film of Konchalovsky was very good and won the award, but this one is even better,” Barber quotes.
Positive reviews have appeared in the foreign press.
“Russian experienced director Andrei Konchalovsky is in strong positions with his monochrome and versatile drama about the Holocaust,” writes.
“It’s sad that in Venice they don’t hand over technical prizes, and the great Russian cameraman Alexander Simonov would already hold one of them in his hands,” notes.
By the way, the film crew was impressed on the red carpet. To exit, Konchalovsky chose a beige jacket and gray trousers, which he added with an extravagant green hat and boots. Vysotskaya appeared in a mini-dress, demonstrating slender legs. The audience appreciated the design decision: thanks to an unusual cut, it seems that the actress is wearing half of a men's jacket. The image was complemented by a short haircut.By the way, it was for filming in “Paradise” that Julia shaved her head half a year ago.
But perhaps most of all admirers of the couple were surprised by the appearance on the red carpet of their son, 12-year-old Petit. Parents usually do not take it to public events. But it seems that an exception was made for the Venice Film Festival.
Recall that Konchalovsky has repeatedly received prizes at the Venice Festival since 1961, when his thesis "The Boy and the Dove" was awarded. And two years ago, he was honored as the best director for the film “White Nights by Postman Alexey Tryapitsyn”.
By the way, in 1966, Konchalovsky’s film The First Teacher brought the prize for the best female role to Natalia Arinbasarova, who was his wife at the time. Now, according to critics, Vysotskaya has every chance of receiving this award.
In any case, the spouses will take away the single award guaranteed: they have already announced the award of the Konchalovsky International Catholic Film Award to them. Robert Bresson.
