Q&A with style creator, Alessio Bolognesi
Barber @ Dandies Barbershop in Roma RM, Italy

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is one of my favorite cuts with curls because I exploited the nature of the hair and cushioned the movement. I used a simple square layer, paying attention to detail and hair. Men with curly hair can also rock this haircut easily.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I used a salt spray on wet hair and dried first with hot air and then with cold air. With the help of a matte clay, I developed a texture of natural curls.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend these curls for teenagers that want to be different from others. I prefer to use these curls on square face shapes with chaotic and disheveled guys who do not want to waste time combing their hair.

Longer Curls on Top

Guys with short curly hair, looking to get an innocent, but cool look. Depending on your style and social freedom, you can spice the look up with a trimmed line on either side, or tune it down by going without. Makes good use of voluptuousness inherent in the curly hair on top, as it gradually fades going down.

Simple and trendy, easy to maintain and super versatile. Basically, the VW of haircuts, if you possess natural curly hair.

Tapered Curly Hair

Stylish tapered curly hair

Q&A with style creator, Haleigh Bailey
Owner @ Chop the Locks Salon in Chesapeake, VA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a tapered curly haircut. I kept the sides shorter to give a more put together look with the contrast of a messy curl look on top.

I love the contrast of the different styles because when they are put together they highlight each other.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I used Paul Mitchell’s Sculpting Foam to give the curls hold and finished with their Tea Tree Shaping Cream to define his natural curls.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is great for guys who want to look put together but have minimal styling in the mornings. My client loved that he was rocking the curls and looking so sharp for prom!

Curly Hair Zero Fade

Naturally curly red hair with tapered fade

Q&A with style creator, Laurence Corcoran
Barber @ Kim’s Barbershop in Belturbet, Co. Cavan, Ireland

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe his hair as a zero fade with curls and a heavily textured top. My favorite thing about the cut is the contrast within the fade, going from near skin to the longer hair on the parietal ridge. I also really like the curls on the top, which I made sure not to cut into.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

To recreate his curly hair, I recommend drying the hair on low heat with the dryer and scrunch drying the curls so they keep the curled look. I also recommend spraying some sea salt spray in the hair to give a nice crispy hold. To finish, I rubbed a clay quickly between my hands and thoroughly applied it throughout the hair in circular scrunching motions for 100% coverage.

Another finishing option would be a small blast of hairspray right at the ends to keep the hair in place all day. This is particularly useful if the client is going out that night or has some event on where they want their hair to look perfect throughout the day.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look to anyone with naturally wavy hair that wants an easy to keep looking great throughout the day. These curls will suit most face types and shapes, but in my opinion, the ideal head shape would be oblong, oval, diamond, or most people with a beard. This haircut suits anyone who wants an easy look to keep throughout the day, but also wants to be on trend with a fade.

For those with naturally wavy hair that is not quite scrunchy enough, a diffuser can be used to make their wavy hair infused with more curls.

Mid-Length Naturally Red Curls

A trendy mid-length haircut for naturally curly red hair

Q&A with style creator, Andrew
Barber @ Saint Barbershop in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I like to describe his curly hair as having the “best of both worlds” It has both a smooth graduation and a ton of texture and movement. Clearly, the natural hair color was my favorite thing about this overall look. Redheads are a dying breed.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I rough dried RUGER sea salt spray into the hair and used a tiny bit of RUGER Matte VOL.2 to finish.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look to anyone with thick curly hair. As for the fade, depending on the size and shape of the head you can always bring the fade a bit higher or lower. I find that wavy hair is getting more trendy in North America.

Curly Slicked Back Hair with Low Fade

A current curly slicked back haircut with low fade

Q&A with style creator, Noel Feliciano
Barber @ Ace of Fades Barbershop in Waterbury, CT

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a variation of the classic pompadour with a tight low fade, curls, and slicked back hair. My favorite thing about this haircut and look is its versatility and the timeless look.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I like using American Crew Gel for control and high shine. To recreate the look, apply the gel to damp hair while combing it through with a standard cutting comb and some minimal blow dry styling to keep the curls soft and crisp. Finish off with the high hold hairspray from Ion.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This haircut is best for the active professional male because of its refined look and the ability to loosen up the curls for a night on the town. It works well with medium to coarse textures with a medium to high density. Wavy or curly hair showcases the texture well on a round or square face shape to minimize the strong jawline on this guest.

Medium Length Natural Curls

A hip medium length naturally curly haircut for black guys

Q&A with style creator, George
Barber @ Untouchable Cuts in Rayne, LA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This hairdo featuring curls is a variation of many different cuts. It’s a “South of France” mixed with a burst fade and a semi-blowout taper. My favorite thing about this haircut is that it’s different from the norm.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

The product I used for the curls in this style was Ultimate Wave by Paul Mitchell. This product is great for guys with curly hair.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The type of client that should consider this style would be someone with naturally curly hair that is of medium texture with a more rounded and full face shape. It’s perfect for some whose lifestyle allows them to slap some product in and be on their way out the door without standing in front of the mirror.

Curly Hair for Older Men

A masculine curly textured haircut for old men
Instagram @irene_terenzohairdressing

Q&A with style creator, Irene
Hairstylist / Colour Specialist @ Terenzo Hairdressing International in Dunkeld, South Africa

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

To enhance the texture of my guest’s natural hair texture and give him a masculine look, I chose to cut short C curvature sides with disconnected textured sections from the front hairline to the crown. I love the way the contrasting textures give him a playful, young and modern look with ringlet curls.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

To recreate this hairstyle, I recommend Terenzo hair products or Redken’s Curvaceous ringlet lotion. Ensure the hair is still wet before application to eliminate frizz. Work through hair, making ringlets with your fingers in the direction you want your curls to fall, then dry with a diffuser or air dry.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend these type of curls for medium to coarse hair textures and medium to thick hair density. This hairstyle can suit all face shapes. It is up to the stylist to adjust the cut accordingly.

It is a quick easy, curly hairstyle to maintain and perfect for guys who dislike spending too much time on their hair. Remember to embrace your curls!

Curly Haircut Temp Fade

A stylish curly temp fade for latino men

Q&A with style creator, Amit Corso
Barber @ Cutting Edge Barbershop in Lancaster, PA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a bald temple fade, keeping the fade low to enhance the outline. My favorite thing about his curly hair is the attention to detail.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

These are his natural curls, so no products were used to curl his hair. I used Wahl clippers and Andis outliners to create the haircut.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This is a classic look with curls that doesn’t go out of style. Round or oblong shaped heads will suit this style the best. The longer the hairstyle, the tighter the curls!

Symmetrical Curls Undercut

Unique curly hair with an undercut

Q&A with style creator, Robyn Pape
Hairstylist @ Red Bloom Salon in Calgary, Alberta, Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

These curls are definitely client-based inspiration. This client always comes in with an idea of what he would like, and I take those ideas and adapt them to his hair type and texture to make it work. This time he wanted to go to a symmetrical shape between both sides rather than the popular side part that we had been giving him before this. Since I’ve seen a rise in bowl cuts as a trend this year, I thought he would be the perfect adventurous client to try it on curly hair!

My favorite thing about it is that it seriously embraces his natural curls. Usually, people with this amount of curl prefer shorter, square shape cuts to try and fight it.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

Since this client loves his curly hair and doesn’t like to tame it down much, we use a lighter paste rather than a clay that would weigh it down. For these curls, I ran Kevin Murphy Free Hold medium hold paste through his hair while wet, then used my blow dryer on low heat to shape the curl with my fingers until it was about 90% dry. Just before it starts to get frizzy!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This guys short curly hair is definitely not one you see every day and might be a little out there for my more conservative clients. I know this client well and have been cutting his hair for at least a couple of years now, so I was sure he would embrace more of a funky lid. This look is obviously for a client with naturally curly hair who isn’t trying to hide it!

Simple Long Curly Hair

A simple long and curly haircut

Q&A with style creator, Elise Troxell
Hairstylist @ Immortal Beloved in Richmond, VA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

His hair and curls are about simplicity. He already had this amazing natural curls and my goal was to create a haircut that would be effortless to style and give him a graceful grow out.

The shape is my favorite element of this haircut because I like how it compliments his personal style as well as his face shape and hair texture.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

For curly hair, I always encourage using a moisture-based shampoo and conditioner to keep those curls from getting too thirsty. For his finished style, I used R+Co’s Atlantis Moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, dried with a microfiber towel before applying R+Co’s Twister Curl Primer and Pinstripe Intense Detangling Spray, then dried under a hood dryer for 30 minutes.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is great for kinky to wavy curl patterns and can be adjusted to suit any face shape. I like this style in particular because it’s great for people who don’t need to wash their hair regularly and are willing to spend a half hour styling when they do.

This style can hold shape for up to a week by spraying a leave-in conditioner in the morning to keep the curls hydrated throughout the day.

Curly Burst Fade Faux Hawk

A hot fauxhawk with a burst fade

Q&A with style creator, Keith Littles
Barber @ The Original Barber Shop in Las Vegas, NV

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This haircut is a burst “South of France” fade. The texture of his hair allows for a great blend. The transition of the fade is definitely my favorite part of the haircut.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

It’s not rocket science when trying to find a product for curly hair. His hair has a natural curl, so a small amount of gel or pomade of choice does his hair right.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Anyone with naturally coarse but fine hair can sport this curly faux hawk. It’s a loud haircut with a lot of class all in one with curls in the mix.

Curly Asian Hair

Cool curly hair for asian men

Q&A with style creator, Shahed Aljermashi
Barber / Hair Artist @ Zinc Hair Salon in Vancouver BC, Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

His hair consists of a fade on the sides and the back of the head while leaving the top longer. My favorite thing about his curly hair is how versatile it is. It’s a look that can be described as both modern and classic. You can customize the curls according to your client’s personality and taste. Comb the top neatly to one side for more of a neat finish, or mess the curls up for a more modern look.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I recommend Davines Curl Enhancing Serum for these defined bouncy curls, or Davines Sea Salt Spray for more of a messy beachy look.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The great thing about his hair is that it can suit almost any guy, you just have to customize it accordingly! This hairstyle is great for those who have a busy lifestyle and don’t have a lot of time on their hands to style their hair. All they need to do is put a little curl serum into the hair, scrunch the curls and go! These curled tresses would look great on men with an oval, square, round or diamond face shapes.

Brushed Forward Curly Hairstyle

Modern brush forward curls

Q&A with style creator, Dani Waters
Barber / Stylist @ Unique Hair Cutz in Harrisburg, PA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This retro curly haircut is sort of a modern take on the 1920s Gatsby era. It’s a young businessman cut with the dark, sculpted sides and some length on top. It’s clipper cut from the parietal ridge down, with a nice taper on the bottom, that is not too tight. From the parietal up, it is scissor cut and left just long enough for some movement.

I love this cut because it’s casual while still looking clean and professional, and it is very low maintenance.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

A lightweight water-based gel or a styling or conditioning cream works best. You want something you can scrunch in when it is wet that will add enough weight to keep the curls from frizzing out as it dries, but you can still run your fingers through the hair. You don’t want too much hold or control on the curls or you’ll lose the natural, tousled look. I used Thickening Cream by Esquire Men’s Grooming. It’s my favorite choice for curls on wash and wear styles.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

His curly hair really makes an impression. It is best for a client with waves or loose curls who don’t want to cut his hair super short but needs it to look well-groomed without having spent much time styling it. It should be maintained about every four weeks to keep it from getting too long at the bottom.

Old-School Fade with Curly Fringe

An old-school fade cut with curly fringe

Q&A with style creator, Higor
Owner / Barber @ Slick Barber Shop in Gorey, Co. Wexford, Ireland

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This guys hair is inspired by the old-school fade. This style of curls is something coming up time and time again with our customers, proving particularly popular among teenagers and younger generations.

With this particular look, what I love the most is the ability to show off a tight, clean fade while still allowing room for volume at the top. The top and bottom compliment each other quite well, and it’s a look we see clients continuously swaying toward in terms of current trends.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

After the initial cut is done, you can maintain the curls at home. The look can be replicated at home by blow drying the hair and running volumizing powder throughout to get the extra bounce on top. We used Schwarzkopf got2be Powder, but any volumizing powder will work.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

These curls would best suit a triangular or diamond face shape, and is usually for those with angular cheekbones and a tight chin and/or a rigid jawline. In terms of hair type, it works well for medium length wavy/curly hair in order to achieve the necessary level of volume on top.

The look has a sense of freedom about it, and if you’re looking to stay on top of the trends for curly hair, this is one to look out for!

Bald Fade with Short Curly Twists

Short curly twists for black guys and a bald fade

Q&A with style creator, Isiah
Creative Director / Hairstylist @

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a bald fade on ethnic hair with some length up top. My favorite thing about this look is that he can wear it natural using a curl sponge, or he can use gel in his hair for a different look.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

I recommend using Johnny B Gel or just some hairspray and a curl sponge.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

To achieve this same exact look, this style is recommended for the ethnic audience.

Stylish Forward Wavy Curls

A stylish forward wavy haircut

Q&A with style creator, Jordan Tomsett
Barber @ The Kemsley Barber Co. in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

His style is one with natural qualities for the get-up and go and still look stylish kind of look! The client had naturally wavy hair, so we went with it. We kept it tighter around the back and sides of the hairline, then gradually longer as we came to the fringe to ensure we kept the waves in.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

There are two styling options for this hair type and curls. For a messier, bedhead look like the one in the picture, I would suggest a styling dust/powder for volume and to create a matte effect. Use a matte clay to style the shorter lengths of hair to keep it looking fresh.

The second styling option is a favorite of mine, using a diffuser to really define and tighten the curls, followed by a cream hair product. The product needs to be creamy enough to add a bit of moisture to the hair, but not so much that the curls clump together!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

As for the ideal client, I would only suggest this style to someone with wavy or curly hair. If you have straight hair, this style will be a very impractical one as the styling you do in the morning will eventually wear off. It is hard to maintain the balance of curls. This isn’t a bad style for a client with a longer face shape, but I wouldn’t suggest this for someone with a rounder face shape. Other than that, it can be quite versatile.

This hairstyle suits any lifestyle, whether you’ve got plenty of time to style your hair in the morning or none at all. This look can even be waxed when wet and let dry into its naturally wavy state for the “in a rush client”.

Pompadour Hair with Curls

A cool curly pompadour for guys

Q&A with style creator, Courtney VanZant
Hair Artist/Color Specialist @ Aria Salon & Spa in Oklahoma City, OK

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a curly pompadour with a balayage application for the color. The versatility of this cut and color allows a variety of styles to be worn, from a groomed curl to a wild look, to even be worn as a man bun.

The fact that this look with all those curls is so versatile and the balayage color application is low maintenance for male clients makes it a favorite of mine.

What products do you recommend to recreate this look?

In regard to styling, I always advise my male clients with curly hair to use a moisturizing product. I like “He’s A 10” 3-in-1 shampoo, conditioner and body wash, as well as “He’s A 10” Miracle Defining Gel.

In regard to color application, I used Pravana Balayage Bleach with a freehand application, as well as a foilage technique to allow select pieces to achieve more lightening. I then toned out any orange with Redken Shades EQ.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The beauty of these curls is that it can work for almost anyone because of the versatility and ease of maintenance. I recommend this look for individuals with natural curls or textured hair.

This style may not appeal to someone that wants a clean cut look because it is more of a casual, “roll out of bed” style with curls.

Mens Sexy Spiral Curls Hair

A sexy spiral curl hairstyle

You’ll stand out in the crowd wearing these natural spirals enhanced with long layers and caramel highlights.

How to Style:

  1. Towel dry hair by wringing out excess moisture.
  2. Work a golf ball-sized amount of medium to high hold styling pomade through hair from mid-lengths to ends.
  3. Finish with a bit of liquid hairspray rather than an aerosol version. The weight of product from a pump spray will help tame spirals.

Recommended Products:

Woody’s Quality Grooming Head Wax is an excellent pomade for curls. It contains beeswax, ginger root, aloe and horsetail extracts, safflower seed oil and cannabis sativa seed oil to nourish deep down for incredibly healthy hair. It’s great for virtually any hair type and it define curls and tames frizzy hair.

Tip:

Moisture is the key to healthy curly hair. Be sure to use shampoos and conditioners containing moisture-rich ingredients. Also, never skip conditioner! Conditioner balances the pH of hair and closes the cuticle, giving it a shinier and more manageable finish for your hair.

Classically Coiffed Curls

In this manly style, tight curls are cut close to the head in a square shape to keep the look strong and masculine.

How to Style:

  1. Towel dry hair.
  2. Distribute a quarter-sized amount of curl defining cream through hair, making sure to get the back and sides as well as the top.

Recommended Products:

Gage Men’s 3/4 Cream is perfect for stronger hold with a medium finish.

Tip:

Ask your stylist for a cut that’s got square edges on it. Square shaped cuts keep the look strong and masculine.

Messy Curls with Bangs

The ladies will be falling for these full curls parted deep to one side with a face-framing fringe.

How to Style:

  1. Work a quarter-sized amount of styling cream through dry hair for curl definition.
  2. Use fingers to part hair to one side. Use either eye as a guide for where to create the part.
  3. Arrange the hair along the hairline down and to the side to create a frame for your face.
  4. Use a small amount of matte finish texture paste to further define hair in the fringe section.

Recommended Products:

Grab Woody’s Quality Grooming Clay for firm, flexible hold with a matte finish.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

heart, oval, round

Tip:

Have your barber or stylist cut the fringe area a bit shorter than the rest of your hair to give it that slightly disconnected feeling.

Curls for Fine Hair

A curly hairstyle with fine hair

Finer hair can be easily styled into full curls with slight definition.

How to Style:

  1. Distribute a nickel-sized amount of matte styling cream through dry hair.
  2. Arrange curls toward the front to create fullness along the front hairline.

Recommended Products:

For texture and separation with a firm yet touchable matte finish, try Alterna Hemp Natural Strength Concrete.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

oval, square, pear

Tip:

Guys with thinning hair can pull off curls as well, though it’s important to choose products with a matte finish or very little shine factor. Medium or high shine products will make the scalp show more, resulting in hair that looks even finer. Matte finish products give body to hair and downplay any areas that are thinning.

Long Center Part Curls

A fun long curly hairstyle with a center part

Go long with these shoulder length curls with long layers and a beveled edge.

How to Style:

  1. Allow hair to air dry or towel dry to remove excess water after showering.
  2. Work a quarter-sized amount of medium weight styling cream through hair from mid-lengths to ends.
  3. Add more product if necessary.

Recommended Products:

Redken Men’s Loose Ends Liquid Pomade gives long layers mild, flexible control.

Tip:

More product can always be added, but once too much is applied, you’ll have to wash it to remove the excess. Better to start off with a little and add more if necessary!

Here are more long hairstyles for guys. Check them out!

Classic Curls Timberlake Tribute

A modern Justin Timberlake short curly cut

These close cut curls styled with touchable product are a nod to the modern music man himself. His short curly hair has always been classic and chic.

How to Style:

  1. Apply a quarter-sized amount of light hold styling cream to dry or towel dried hair.
  2. Finish with a light hold hairspray. Opt for medium or buildable hold if you like more control.

Recommended Products:

For a firm hold, finish with Redken Men’s Hold Still styling spray for lasting power and a natural-looking finish. The humidity-resistant formula helps control fly aways and eliminate static.

Tip:

The sides of this cut can be done with clippers, though keep in mind that curly hair looks shorter once it bounces back. Use a longer clipper setting first and remember that if it’s still too long, you can always get a shorter haircut.

Long Curly Dreadlocks

Awesome long dreads for African American men

This style is the beginning of dread creation and is great for those who want a reggae style of curls with more of a professional polish.

How to Style:

  1. Check out DreadHeadHQ.com for some fantastic information about starting your dreads!
  2. Maintain your dreads by applying wax to part or all of each dread and using either a palm-rolling or finger-rolling technique to keep them tight.

Recommended Products:

Try the Ultra Dread Kit from DreadHeadHQ.com. It contains great products, tools and instructions for creating and maintaining dreads!

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This particular length is great on those with oval, square or pear shaped faces. Opt for longer dreads if you have a round or heart-shaped face.

Tip:

Using a starter kit as described above will give you better results than simply not washing your hair. Braids aren’t the best way to start dreads because they’ll often result in dreads that are loose and fuzzy.

Short Curly Ringlets

Sweet short ringlets for guys with naturally curly hair

Here, ringlet style curls are defined with gel for a polished and controlled look.

How to Style:

  1. Shampoo and condition.
  2. Wring excess moisture from hair with a towel.
  3. Work a quarter-sized amount of medium hold styling gel throughout hair.
  4. Finish with a shine infusing hairspray for extra control and polish.

Recommended Products:

Try American Crew Curl Construct for bold curls with a full, defined style.

Tip:

Apply to fingertips first before distributing through hair in a raking motion. Using fingertips ensures the product is distributed evenly rather than clumping in one area.

A great finish centers around finding the perfect curly hairstyle to complement your face shape and using the right products for your hair type. Pro products are more concentrated so you’ll get more bang for your buck.

Additionally, remember that when you switch up your style, you’ll probably need a different product since you’re going for a new look! Keep life interesting by trying one of these head-turning curly hairstyles!
